Being a social media marketer is a 24/7 job where sleep feels like a guilty pleasure. A social media manager does so much work in one day including updating client’s profile, checking and responding to emails, interacting with other social media profiles, thinking of new ideas, creating content and managing all the other social media marketing tasks as well.

They are responsible for how people perceive a brand at first glance. And to be successful, the number one skill that any social media manager needs to have is being ambitious. After that, the rest of the skills come in.

Here are the top 7 essential skills that every social media manager needs to have:

1- Tech Savvy:

If you’re not tech savvy, you are not qualified to become a social media manager. Being tech savvy to become tech savvy is like being creative to become an artist. You can’t really separate the two things.

Now, what exactly is tech savviness? Well, in terms of social media marketing, it encompasses everything like understanding how social media works, the impact of all the different features, being up to date with all the latest happenings in the social media world as well as understanding each social media network type and how to navigate it.

It also includes having a basic knowledge of how paid social media ads work as well as how algorithms work because social media networks like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, etc. rely heavily on algorithms to rank your posts and profile.

2- Management and Planning:

You can’t be a social media manager without management skill in your bag. In terms of social media marketing, management means that you will need to take each social media network as a separate project. And each project will have different short-term and long-term goals that require serious planning and careful execution.

So, in order to become a successful social media manager, you will need to be able to think strategically about how you want to manage your social media channel.

3- Solid Communication:

This is also a skill that is crucial in order to become a successful social media manager. That’s because you’ll be dealing with people from day to night whether they are your potential followers, followers, customers, influencers or even your competitors. Not to mention, all of them will be different from one platform to another.

So, solid communication skills would mean that you understand your audience and what they expect from you. Then you’ll be able to form long-lasting relationships wherever you go and grow your social media presence in a positive manner.

4- Creative:

Creativity comes hand in hand with social media marketing. In today’s digital age, where millions of brands are on social media, the competition is so high that you can’t stand out unless your posts are creatively unique. You can get some results by following a bunch of influencers but in the end, you’ll just be a copycat.

Even if you don’t have a creative bone in your body, you can improvise. Take inspiration from your influencers and mix and match until you find a style that’s uniquely yours. That’s also a type of creativity which can bring you some good results.

5- Writing and Editing:

When you are running a social media profile, you will need to write content on a regular basis whether they are captions for your posts or stories, comments or messages. So, you will need to have good writing and editing skills. Your grammar should be perfect with a good vocabulary. But at the same time, your written content shouldn’t be formal because social media is no place for formal content.

The writing style should be a good balance between formal and conversational, leaning on the conversational side. People don’t like robots and that’s exactly you come off as when you are being extra formal. Also, you should have good editing and formatting skills so that your written content is more appealing.

6- Design and Photo Editing:

This is also something that is absolutely necessary when you are a social media marketer. Social media today is mostly visual and you can’t go far if you have poor quality photos and videos on your profile.

As far as designing goes, you have tools like Canva that will help you with how you present your photo. Canva has some built-in templates that you can use as well and it also has separate graphics that you can combine to create an image that looks professionally crafted.

Photo editing is not that difficult as well because every social media platform, especially Instagram, has tools and filters that let you edit your photo to the best of their potential. Not to mention, there are third-party apps for the same purpose as well. The only thing in photo editing that you need to keep in mind is knowing when to stop.

More often than not, people end up editing their photos too much which makes them seem desperate and their photo doesn’t look good at all. Editing should be done to enhance the natural lights and shades as well as remove slight imperfections. In the end, photos should still look real.

7- Organized and Efficient:

If you don’t organize your workspace no matter if it’s in your real office or your pc, you’ll have less productivity. And being organized doesn’t strictly mean that you need to tidy up your mess. It also means that you tidy up your schedule as well. Being on social media all the time can sometimes lessen your productivity as you see something that interests you or you find it funny.

As a social media manager, your task is to stay organized and plan your time schedule so that it’s ideal for reaching the goals that you set for your profile. Work efficiently so that you cover a lot of ground in as short a time as possible.
