Twitter Acquired Periscope, a Live Streaming Video App
It seems like Twitter is focusing on video with a whole new motivation in 2015. Last month, Twitter introduced video embedding feature for websites which made sharing videos from Twitter to websites really easy. But Twitter did not slow down.
Reports by Business Insider and Bloomberg Business state that Twitter acquired Periscope last month. The price for which Twitter bought this app is not made public. Periscope is a live streaming video app which will enable people to stream live video on Twitter from wherever they are. The app is still in Beta version and is not announced yet.
In 2012, Twitter bought Vine which allows people to post 6 seconds videos. In January, Twitter made 30 seconds of video uploading possible but Vine and Twitter video do not let people stream their video live. Due to which the rise of Meerkat (a live streaming video app) on Twitter in the last week makes sense. And it seems only logical that Twitter announces Periscope soon too.
With Twitter so focused on video sharing, other social media platforms will likely concentrate on their video sharing as well. I think it is safe to say that you can expect a lot of big changes in social media marketing by the end of 2015.
