Instagram May Let You Follow Hashtags Soon in Addition to Profiles
Instagram is testing out a new feature with a small circle of Instagram users and it could be rolled out globally soon. With this new feature, you will be able to follow hashtags in addition to Instagram accounts. The feature was first spotted by Pippa Akram of TheNextWeb.

You can see how this new feature would be useful. For example, there is a new hashtag that’s trending but you don’t know which Instagram account to follow in order to get the latest updates. You could follow that hashtag instead and you will be notified with updates related to it. Or you are in the mood of watching cute cat or puppy pics. By following a simple hashtag, you will get a page full of adorable little puppies or cats. Seriously, this could make Instagram more enjoyable and fun than it already is.
This change could also resolve the algorithm issues that people are frustrated with. Right now, Instagram is prioritizing posts that have the most potential of gaining engagement instead of posts that people are the most interested in. The former is great for ad revenues but the latter ensured that people got to see what they wanted.
With this new feature, people could just search for the hashtag that they are interested in and they would get results that feature that hashtag.
It’s worth mentioning that you will not get all the posts related to that hashtag. For now, Instagram will just show top posts and recent stories regarding the hashtag that you follow. That’s probably because of the popularity of some hashtags.
Even though the feature is not available to all Instagram users right now, there is a huge chance that it will soon be. That’s because most of the test features by Instagram become publically accessible. Given that this feature is quite useful, it’s a safe bet that it would be rolled out globally very soon.
