Facebook will enable check in for human disasters around the world
Facebook already has a safety-check in place for natural disasters. Whenever a natural disaster like earthquake, hurricane or flood occurs, Facebook asks users in that area to confirm whether they are in that area and if they are in that area, are they safe?
But a few days ago, when Paris attacks happened, Facebook rolled out safety-check for human disasters as well. Facebook users from other countries were encouraged to use France flag filter on their profile pictures as well to show that they support the people of Paris, France.
This faced a lot of criticism due to the reason that people believed that there were things happening all over the world that were far more critical, why not enable safety checks for those places as well? For example, Beirut lost 40 people to bombings just a day before Paris attacks. Why not them? Why only Paris?
To this Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said, “You are right that there are many other important conflicts in the world. We care about all people equally, and we will work hard to help people suffering in as many of these situations as we can.”
He said that the safety check feature was enabled only that day for human disasters and in future, it will be used for other human disasters as well.
That should be true because Facebook has more than a billion daily users for all over the world. If the company wants to keep its global users loyal, it needs to keep a global perspective.
