5 Social Media Marketing Trends That Will Shape 2018

In the past few years, social media has grown so much that it has now become a part of almost everyone’s life no matter how simple or complex their lifestyle is. And companies recognize this and that’s why social media marketing is now the most prominent medium to reach their customer base.
But, social media is an ever evolving medium and that’s stayed true in the year 2017 as well. There have been some big changes in almost all the social media platform including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube etc. In the light of these recent changes, the social media trends are changing as well. And we all know that a good social media marketing strategy includes adapting to the latest trends and using them to the brand’s best advantage.
So, without further ado, here are the social media marketing trends that will shape 2018 so that you can prepare for them and include them in your marketing strategies.
1- Instagram Stories:
Yes, Facebook copied Snapchat’s feature and included it on the platform itself as well as Instagram and WhatsApp. Even though Snapchat was the one who introduced the Stories that disappeared after 24 hours, Instagram Stories became and are still becoming more and more popular.
In fact, Instagram Stories have over 20 million views per day and that’s just after a year of the feature’s debut. With the rate the view count is growing, by the end of 2018, nearly half of Instagram users will be posting Instagram Stories.
Since, they are so popular, it only seems logical that brands need to get in on the action as well. It doesn’t matter if you are a B2B or B2C brand, you should use Instagram Stories to showcase your products or services or highlighting the newest discount or promotion you’ve got going.
If you’ve got more than 10,000 followers on Instagram, you can even add a link in your story which is a huge deal because Instagram doesn’t let you post links other than your bio.
2- Influencer Marketing:
More and more brands will be collaborating with other influencers to increase their audiences. Especially micro-influencers in any niche will be reached a lot because they have a more engaged audience than that of a huge influencer.
It’s the fastest and most result deriving way of getting more followers and potential customers. Over 90 % of brands who did influencer marketing claimed of being successful in it, according to a report. But even with that being true, it takes time, effort and good communication skills to establish a relationship with an influencer enough that they introduce your brand to their audiences.
Still, influencer marketing has been on the rise in the last couple of years and it will become even bigger in the year 2018.
3- Live Streaming:
Broadcasting live streams has been a trend in the last couple of years since the introduction of live streaming apps on social media. We’ve seen a lot of brands using it for multiple purposes like live tutorials, code alongs, customer service, Q&A’s, and lots of other stuff.
Even though Facebook has stopped paying brands to create live streams, it doesn’t mean that live streaming is facing a downfall. Nope, not the case at all.
2018 will be huge in the live streaming department. Brands who do it right will be with the leading ones because live streaming actually works. It brings brands and followers together in a way like nothing else can.
4- Twitter May Fall Out Unless It Makes Some Big Changes:
2017 was not a good year for Twitter even though towards the end, the company made many big changes including the extension of 140 character limit to 280 characters per tweet, introduction of Threads that lets you create tweetstorms, extension of Twitter user handles to 50 characters, and some other changes as well.
One thing that it didn’t really succeed in getting rid of the harassment and abuse issue that the platform is facing for quite some time and Twitter users are not happy about it.
Twitter is making some advances in this issue though with the verification badges being removed from certain accounts and making big changes in its verification policies. But still, if Twitter doesn’t make some big changes, and good ones at that, the company may face even more downfall in the year 2018.
Chatbots are not really a robotic voice now. They have character and they are the fastest way to solve the usual customer service issues and even placing orders. If you haven’t really used chatbots in 2017, make it your mission to at least try them out in 2018 so that you may know if your followers are interested in them or not. They may work for your brand or they might not. But, either way, make sure to give them a solid try.
You can customize these bots to give them a voice that’s unique to your brand so that your followers can feel connected to you even if you are not available to them 24/7. Chatbots will also decrease your workload a lot because of their automated responses solving the usual problems that your customers face and hence, you will have more time to focus on other marketing strategies.
There are other trends that will be front and center in the year 2018 including augmented and virtual reality, online hangouts and more importantly, focus on generation Z (young people born in the 90s and 2000s). These ‘kids’ are the most tech savvy generation on social media right now because they have grown up 100% online and that means that they are easier to influence. So, keep up with these trends in 2018 if you want to be ahead of your game in social media marketing.
